Digital Photography for the Technically Challenged
Does the whole idea of f-stops and shutter speeds put you off taking your photography further? Learn how to get your camera off Auto mode in easy steps. This is a beginner’s class in which you can learn the basics of exposure and how to put it into practice, find out what your camera can do, and get the chance to try things out with help on hand. You’ll need to have either a DSLR* or a bridge** camera to get the best out of this class. (If you’re not sure what you’ve got, just give me the make and model of your camera and I’ll tell you) Maximum 8 people.
*DSLRs have interchangeable lenses and allow you to control aperture and shutter speed manually
**Bridge cameras allow you to control aperture and shutter speed manually, but do not have interchangeable lenses. They ‘bridge’ the gap between compact cameras and DSLRs.
What does the content cover?
-Focusing: focus lock, changing focus points, focus modes, manual focus
-Exposure: the exposure triangle, changing aperture and its effects, changing shutter speed and its effects, ISO and when to use it
-Exposure compensation
-White Balance
-Lenses: fixed versus zoom, effects of focal lengths, which focal length for which subject
-Flash: when and how to use it, fill flash
Who is this class for?
This workshop is the right one for you if –
-You have a DSLR camera
-You have a bridge camera and want to learn about photography in more depth
-You don’t have either of these but are thinking of buying one and would like to understand more before you do – if that’s the case, I can lend you a camera for the day.
What previous knowledge do I need?
-The workshop is designed to be suitable for you even if you’re a complete beginner with no previous knowledge.
-It will also suit those who have dabbled a bit or know a little already, as we cover a lot of ground during the day.

Digital Photography workshops in London
Gilly regularly teaches on a variety of workshops for Hairy Goat Mystery Photo Tours (currently in the top five most popular London attractions on TripAdvisor!)
Hairy Goat runs beginners, intermediate, and night/low-light workshops. Gilly (or one of the other tutors) will spend four hours helping you learn more about how to use your camera, and after a break for lunch, Corinna or one of her guides will take you on a two-hour guided photo walk round some of the quirkiest and most interesting parts of the City. The tutor will also be there in the afternoon to help with any photography problems that arise and to give advice and suggestions.
The night and low-light photography workshops are structured slightly differently: they run for three hours and most of it is spent in the field, taking photos.
Hairy Goat Workshop Dates 2011
Although I take regular workshops for Hairy Goat, I can't give specific dates here as the tutor taking the course is subject to change at short notice. All Hairy Goat tutors are chosen for their skill, experience and ability to put their subject across effectively and enthusiastically; whichever tutor takes your workshop, you'll certainly have an enjoyable and productive day. If you go to the Hairy Goat website, you'll find details of all current course dates and you can book your place from there.
